Alicante city is the capital of the Alicante province, in the region of Valencia in south eastern Spain. Once a strategic Mediterranean port, it is now one of the most renowned and admired towns on the Costa Blanca. With a population of around 340000, Alicante is an important economic centre with its wealth coming mainly from agriculture, fishing, trade and tourism. As well as boasting miles of beautiful sandy beaches, characteristic of the Costa Blanca, the city has a rich history which can be witnessed in its many cathedrals, churches, museums and the famous Santa Barbara Castle, amongst Europe`s largest medieval fortresses, spanning the entire summit of Benacantil Mountain. The elegant port and marina is situated in the centre of Alicante and offers a wide selection of stylish bars and cafes and fine restaurants. The El Puerto complex in the centre of the port has a nautical club and sailing school, while the Panoramis Centre, a short ferry trip from the marina has excellent shops, bars and restaurants with views over the Santa Barbara Castle and Marina. Alicante also offers pleasant palm-tree lined boulevards and a seamless blend of the old town and modern developments. The historic `La Explanada de España` is a stunning tiled boulevard which extends around the marina, is the essence of Alicante. Both locals and tourists alike stroll along the boulevard looking at stalls selling local handcrafts and stopping in cafes to soak up the atmosphere whilst enjoying a coffee. It is the focus of many of Alicante`s numerous fiestas, as well as many free concerts, which are held in the music pavilion there. Alicante is famous for its fiestas which are held throughout the year, with people coming from all over the world for the `Hogueras de San Juan`. For sport enthusiasts, the city`s `El Tossal Park` is an impressive sports complex, with a football pitch, athletic stadium, gymnastics centre, sports pavilion and swimming-pool.A rich ethnic diversity affords Alicante an energetic multicultural ambiance. The official languages are Spanish and Valencian, but both English and German are commonly spoken also. The nightlife is vibrant-cafes in the port area become lively clubs at night, not closing until dawn, while in summer `chiringuitos` (or kiosks) on the beach host the vibrant nightlife. There is also 2 cinemas and the opportunity to enjoy opera, ballet, plays and musicals at Alicante`s main theatre, Teatro Principal. The sunny climate of Alicante is another reason for its huge popularity. With almost year-round sunshine, an average temperature of around 16 Celsius in winter and 32 Celsius in summer and a pleasant breeze from the Mediterranean sea, the climate promotes a healthy outdoor lifestyle. Added to the rich canvas of cultural activities, superb food and drink and scenic surroundings, Alicante is the perfect place to enjoy all the most celebrated aspects of Mediterranean living.
